It's always the perfect time to tackle to your unpaid claims as there could be some money left on the table to collect. Check out these three places I mention below to find those unpaid claims.
1.) Denials from the Clearing House. In your clearinghouse there will be an area where unprocessed claims are just hanging out collecting "dust" instead of MONEY. These claims were not processed due to errors. Go back as far as you can on these claims and start fixing them. An over-burdened billing department often misses these or doesn't realize to look out for them. REMEMBER: Claims that get stopped at this point never arrived to the insurance company and are subject to the Timely Filing Deadline so you want to get them fixed and filed as soon as possible. 2.) Next check your EOB's and ERAs. Keep an eye out for EOB's that have not been entered or set aside for follow-up and then forgotten. Hopefully there will be some denials that can be corrected, re-submitted and get paid. Additionally, many times we see ERAs that are automatically entered in, leaving services getting written off when they could've been corrected and re-submitted. 3. Now I want you to take a look at your Accounts Receivable Report. Get on the phone and start tackling those unpaid claims. Chase chase chase them up! If you hear that they "never received" some of these claims, then NO PROBLEM you can just re-submit those and be on your way to (most-likely) getting a payment. For the portion that just didn't get paid, you'll have to gather more information on why they didn't pay out, correct and re-submit as applicable. In many offices there are outstanding claims to be collected on in some way. These tips should really help you with that.
